    Check a list for a value and return Y if is there

    I want to type in a value and have Excel check that against a list of values. I that list contains that value, I then want another cell to display Y. If it is not in the list, I want it to display N. I tried VLOOKUP and IF functions with no luck. Thanks in advance.
