Plotting data points on a linear scale [SOLVED]

chander

New Member
I need some urgent help on plotting data points on a linear scale. I played around with various chart options, but cant seem to figure out. My data contains 2 point values (per parameter) for a few parameters, and i would like to show them in a chart format (instead of a boring table). The data values are always in the range of 1-6.

I am posted a pictorial representation of the desired output.

Appreciate some quick help.

HI Narayan. Appreciate you noticing my post. Please find the sample data below. Please note, the data and number of parameters could be different.

Thanks in advance.

2013 Input Score 2025 Input Score

Direct Competition 4.58 3.95

Customer Pressure 3.47 3.84

Summary of Direct Forces 4.25 3.92

Indirect Competition 4.42 4.24

Threat of Entry 4.28 4.99

Supplier Pressures 4.66 4.46

Regulatory Pressures 4.50 4.70

Summary of Key Limiting Forces 4.28 4.24

Overall Market Force Analysis 4.25 3.92

If you select the range, I assume A1:C10

Insert Chart

Select the Line Chart

Then

Right Click on the Chart

Select data

Switch Row/Column

Is that what your after ?

If your referring to the arrows past the ends of the data points

For each series add a linear trendline

set the forward and backward interpolation to 1

Set the line properties to have an arrow and line width/color

Now for the original data series set the line ends to a Circle and set the size

Hi Hui. Appreciate your inputs and the file. However, unfortunately - this is not what I am looking for. As I drew in the pictorial output above https://www.dropbox.com/sh/32yz12b4bbidjby/5FAe7IFuCP#f:picture1.png

Each line is unique for a unique parameter and the 2 dots on a specific line are the 2 values on a range of 1-6. Hope this clarifies, and wonder if I can get support of this forum to get over my problem. Thanks

Can you explain what you want as I plotted the data you posted

Use

Direct Competition 4.58 3.95

As an example

Hi Chander ,

If you can wait , we can come up with a solution , but that last sentence of your first post is somewhat intimidating. Today being Saturday , it would be nice if you could wait till Monday.

Hui - I was thinking of using an XY chart with error bars.

Can you have a look at the following ?

Should the arrows extend to 1 and 6 for each series ?

Hi Hui, Narayan. Sorry, for taking 6 / 7 hours for my response to your support above.

And, Narayan - but no means I can be intimidating...I am genuinely seeking help, and do desire to complete this by Monday EOD..Hence the urgency.

Perhaps since I am not the expert in excel - may be I havent been able to communicate my desire properly. So, I am attaching a sample picture from an article. https://www.dropbox.com/s/klkacih4ieu211v/Picture2.png

I would like to get capabilities to redproduce this kind of a chart / picture in excel. So far, I have been doing this in powerpoint, by manually drawing the location of the data point on the line axis relevant to the specific parameter. I hope this is clearer now..

Also, I have uploaded the sample data on dropbox (since I guess the copy paste didnt come up properly). https://www.dropbox.com/s/ldpdlqhm4xuvnhm/sample%20data.xlsx

Look forward to getting your help.

Best. Chander

It is remarkable that your first 2 pictures look nothing like the 3rd and so the fact that we weren't able to reproduce your results should not be surprising to you.

Hi Chander ,

Somehow , I don't think that a line chart is really going to present the correct picture ; if you can say what exactly you wish to present , there may be better alternatives.

Is the 2025 Input Score of 3.95 better or worse than the 2013 Input Score of 4.58 ?

The picture you have shown looks better because all the values pertaining to one category are less / more than all the values pertaining to the other category , so that the lines don't criss-cross.

Hi Hui, Naranyan,

Thanks for your responses. This time, the reason for delayed response from my end is the time zone gap.

I had a look at the file from Hui and looks great. This is what I wanted. Much appreciated.

And Hui - regret the inconvenience due to lack of clarity initially. I didn't have an exact example picture initially, and took me sometime to locate and share some true sample output I desired.

Now - I know where and who to come to next time for excel support. This case has made me conscious once again to enhance my excel skills.

MANY THANKS ONCE AGAIN.

Best. Chander

Hi Hui. Sorry, but just taking a proper look at the chart output and not able to move the chart output to a new tab (it copies only the values and not the legend and chart area / lines). Ideally, I would like to see the chart output in a separate tab and then copy paste it into a power point presentation. Can you help share how to do this. Best. Chander

Good day chander

Your post has been marked [SOLVED] but you are still asking questions, do you want the [SOLVED] removed, any one viewing will see it is [SOLVED] and will not view/help.

The chart I supplied is actually 2 charts on top of each other

The Top chart is used for the Vertical axis and grid lines only

If you re-download (the same link) I have grouped them together so they will move as a single unit

Hi Hui. Sorry. Didn't get to know about your update till the time I logged in today to request for another help from this forum (and my requests end up being over the weekend somehow). Thanks for your updated sheet. I had managed it myself in the meanwhile. Thanks

Hi, chander!

Maybe you want to share your solution with the community, so as people who read this would have the issue or question and the solution or answer as well.

Regards!
