Why can't I add space characters to downloaded data

I downloaded the attached data from the NASDAQ website. Using cell D9 as an example, if I press F2, then attempt to add some trailing spaces, for some reason I can't do that.

I can add trailing spaces in the formula bar, but when I select D9 then press F2, the trailing spaces aren't there.

Why can't I add characters to this data? I think it might have something to do with the fact that I downloaded this from a website.

Does anybody have any ideas?

You need to format your data as Text to be able to add trailing spaces (but what are you trying to achieve with these spaces?)

I wanted to add extra spaces to test the TRIM( ).
