Recreate Panel Chart Excel 2003 To Excel 2007

Hi all,

Using Excel 2007

I found a nice tutorial on Jon Peltier's blog for a panel chart http://peltiertech.com/WordPress/chart-busters-compare-employee-sales/

The instructions appear to be for Excel 2003 or earlier

I am trying to make it work in Excel 2007 and stumbling a bit.

Before adding the helper chart I checked that the first schart isusing the primary axis - it is.

I selecte the table for the helder data and attempted to paste special

but when I'm done the original data is plotted on the secondary axis and the helper data is plotted on the primary axis.

When I click on either data series, the Primary and Secondary axis is ghosted, so I cannot flip them.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks

Winston

I dunno. I tried. I failed

Not exactly what you want, but here:

In cell bars. You can sort too if you take the time to set it up like the chandoo 'survey results' post.

With a little more putzing around:

No doubt it won't pass muster with the chart elites, but it's an idea at least.

Some changes in Excel 2007, which have carried through to 2010 prevent Jons instructions from working as per his link.

But it can be done but requires a slight modification to the instructions presented by Jon

Try the following

You can't use 0 as the values for your Column Chart,

So put any value in the 3 Column Cells

You can't copy and paste special as per Jons instructions to add a series

Select the Chart and Right Click, Select Data and Add a Series as per Jons Instructions

Select the Chart and then using the Up/Down arro keys rotate through the series until you get to Series 7, the data series you just added

Right Click on it and Change Series Chart type and select Column Chart

With the Same series selected, Goto Chart Tools data labels and put them anywhere

Now Drag each of the labels up and outside the chart to where you want them to appear

Select the 7th series again and now set the Fill and Line to None

Carry on as per Jons instructions

Hui, Dan -

Thanks for your help.

A few changes from the Excel 2003 instructions

But in the end looks great and is 1 chart area as opposed to 3 chart areas placed side by side to look like a panel chart

Still some oddities

1.) A secondary axis was added which I deleted, but if you click on the column chart series it reads as plotted on the Primary Axis

2.) I could not get the secondary category axis.

I added the data labels and changed from value to category name

To make it appear more like the category axis, I moved the data labels high and

moved the plot area down

I posted the final up to skydrive:

Winston
