PowerQuery, PowerPivot and Excel Data Model

1. How does PowerQuery differ from PowerPivot?
2. What exactly is "the data model?"
3. How does PowerQuery, PowerPivot and the Excel Data Model tie in to each other?

If you can cite references and videos, that would be very helpful.

PQ is all about "transformation", whereas the power of PowerPivot is
1) DAX (data analysis expressions), the ability to create measures beyond native pivot usage,
2) and the data model in which you combine fact tables with dimension (or "lookup") tables.

PQ cleans, standardizes, organizes and structures data into tables, which can be fed to the data model (PowerPivot). Then via DAX one can create all kinds of stunning measures.

If you want a great reference that comes with free material and video guidance, I recommend ExcelIsFun youtube channel from Mike Girvin, Microsoft Excel MVP and Highline College professor.
