Is there a way of opening an excel 2007 worksheet in excel 2013 without losing conditional formatting ?
Help will be much appreciated.

CF will not disappear. Maybe your colour theme has changed.
Look on your ribbon for:

Why do you say CF has disappeared?
Did you check the rule?

Thank you graH-Guido for trying to help. But it seems that I did not state the problem clearly enough.
The problem is : Trying to open an excel 2007 file in excel 2013 , this error message appears:
We found a problem with some content in the <<file name.xlsm >>. Do you want us to try to recover as much as we can ? If you trust the source of this workbook click "yes" .
After clicking " yes ", the following message appears : " Excel was able to open the file by repairing or removing the unreadable content "
But all conditional formatting and other features of the opened worksheet are lost.

Slightly different issue then the one in the first message.
The file is somehow corrupted. One of the XML sections will have missing tags.
do you have an earlier backup of the file?

The problem is encountered by others using different worksheets. And I get the same error message using different worksheets.
The problem seems to be a compatibility issue between excel 2007 and excel 2013 , not a corrupt file.

Hmm, so not about one file, but different ones?
Does safe mode work?
if you try to open the same file on another computer, not at work, does it work? If that's possible to test that is.
If so many files are Involved and so many users, then maybe the installation of 2013 needs te be repaired?

Googling revealed this to be a known issue.
Uncheck in the settings something called DDE seems to be a way it could be solved.
Other interesting alternative would be to change the file extension to .xls. not sure if this would keep your CF.
Some other tips here
