Looking for non blank cells in certain columns

I'm trying to find a way to copy data based on non blank cells in certain columns

the data is like this:

A__B_______C_______D__________E

No OldName NewName OldAddress NewAddress

1__David.._......_Dakota...._Chicago

2__Michael_.......LA................

3__Jane..._Janet...Dallas.....Tennesse

4__Josh..._Joshua..Manhattan..........


As you can see i'm trying to get the update name and address from the data. What i want is to extract/copy Row 1,3,4 (from A to E) to a new sheet. Can anyone show me a quick way to do this with/without using VBA? Thanks in advance

I believe by 'update name and address ' you mean to say NewNAame and NewAddress


If yes, then why row 1,3 and 4.


I could see at only at row 3 you have update name and address but at row 1 new name is missing and at row 4 new address is missing.


Can u plz specify bit more clearly what is your criteria / rule to copy data.

Hi kaushiks03 and faseeh. Well the rule is to get the row number whenever there is update in name OR address. Still working on faseeh solution, but thanks in advance. Btw, the data that I have to retrieve is in Hundreds of files. So, I like to do some VBA processing. But if faseeh formula works, I think I can loop it trough VBA.


Faseeh formula need "and" in the IF part but all goes well. Thanks.

Faseeh, as I mention above, your formula works great. I did make a mistake, I should add OR in the IF part, not AND. I think I will use your solution, yet, I still looking for a way to know when to stop copying the formula in VBA. I think it should stop when it return 0 or BLANK (also, array formula takes quite a bit of the resource). I am dealing with hundreds thousand records in about 500 - 1000 files.


Btw, I came across a simple solution to SELECT NON BLANK CELL manually (which you can processed it using VBA later) by Rick Rothstein an Excel MVP for those who haven't know it already.


Here is another way to select the non-blank cells via the keyboard (it doesn’t matter if the first cell in the columns is blank or not); just execute the following keystrokes one after another (if you look at the screen when keying them in, you should get the idea why it works)…

Ctrl-f

* (an asterisk, which is keyed in using Shift-8)

Alt-i

Ctrl-a
