I work in asset management and was wondering what everybody's ideas are to track the change in assets that we manage (overall).
Broadly speaking there are two influences:
- Investors' money flowing in and out of funds (inflow)
- Value of investments that changes with the markets (market impact)
I was thinking of creating a scatter diagram with flows on the X-axis and market impact on the Y-Axis. If you look at the 45 degree line you can easily spot what is the greatest contributor to the change in asset values.
If you line up 12 of these graphs you can look at the overall trend.
I'm also considering to add a third dimension, creating a bubble diagram by varying the size of the data points to reflect the assets under management.
I'm interested in other suggestions how to track these changes in a visually attractive way.
