I dunno.

I know, I know, part of the core of the bullet chart is showing bad, kinda good, good values. Obviously, that's tough in a single cell. A little conditional formatting won't tell you where good is, but it will tell you whether your value is in your 'good' range.

So.....good? Bad? Ok? Total trash?

The idea is good

Not sure about the character your using for the Goal, have you tried a Bulls Eye or Large Dot Character (It will need a small piece of space around it for best effect) or maybe a Cross "+" sign

and the colors look better than Black/White

Have a look. I was using two /'s and everything is in small fonts.

Formula uses names for the cells containing the characters so you can hot swap at will.

Have a look at the Blank Circle (Solid Circle)

Character code 25CF which is in the Geometric Shapes area of the Symbols dialog

It gives a good effect

Interesting approach. Usually not all characters have same widths which will create some problems when you use space to fill. But you have used "small fonts" so that is not an issue.

Btw, have you seen http://chandoo.org/wp/2008/07/21/dashboard-bullet-graphs-excel/

it takes few more cells, but shouldnt be a problem (as you can set it up in a separate sheet and then use camera tool to extract the live snapshot for dashboards).

Also, you might simplify the interpretation by using | and + symbols for targets above actuals and below actuals respectively and a simple - for the actual series.b

Ohhh I've seen it. I use it for a few things, though not with camera mode.

Trouble is---the project that prompted me getting creative has 'many' items which require the bullet.

Will camera mode do ok if it extends more than a one page's worth of data?
