Hello!

I am a new member but I've been a fan of this website for a while. Love it!

So I have recently become excel obsessed, I am studying a bbus at Uni majoring in IT and love building databases, excel programs in my spare time (because I am a massive nerd ;)

My question is - what kind of jobs are out there in the world that you would do this fulltime? Or even a great part of your role?

I currently work as an EA and I build programs to help myself all the time but I am curious to see if anyone does this as a job?

Thanks

I am sure others will comment but here is my 5 cents worth.

Generally, Excel is a Tool to help you with your job just as a calculator is

So unless you go into being an Excel consultant or Excel Ninja (we are unpaid so it's not a good career choice) Excel skills are simply a skill which aids you in your choosen career.

Now as a BBus you should be thinking what areas am I interested in and how can I then use Excel to assist me.

I would recommend learning how businesses operate from the ground up. This involves understanding the Physical drivers of a business and then how the data within the business flows around that to make the business work. Systems analysis.

In doing this you will develop both an understanding of how the business works, the financial aspects and be able to back that up with an understanding of information flow.

Excel can be thrown in there at any stage to improve, analyse or report systems/information as required.

Hi ,

As usual Google comes to your rescue ! If I put in :

Hottest IT skills

in Google , there are 43 million results ! The top five are :

2. https://blogs.oracle.com/oracleuniversity/entry/what_are_the_hottest_it

You can see that BI is highly in demand. However , since businesses are different from one another , being a Data Analyst for an FMCG organization will require a different kind of knowledge and acumen from being a Data Analyst for an insurance company.

In addition to IT skills and knowledge , what is needed is domain knowledge ; you need to decide which domain you would like to go into.
