Data labels for one data series resets to data labels for another data series

File attached. In cells C8:F8, you can click a checkbox to display a data series. Last time I selected the 'Running Total' checkbox, I was able to display the related data labels which appeared above the columns.

Then I unchecked Running Total, and selected another checkbox, then I came back to 'Running Total' and checked it again which is what you see in the attached file now.

If you mouse over the data labels, it refers to the series called 'Annual Gain.'

If you select a checkbox to display a data series, then display labels, then uncheck the checkbox, the data labels remain but they are blank.

The chart references a table starting in B50.

Why does it reset? When I come back to 'Running Total' and select it again, I would expected to see the related data labels still displayed above the columns.

How can I make that happen? Is this even possible?

In short, anytime I select a checkbox for a data series, I would like for the related data labels to always display wherever I positioned them last.

I cannot reproduce what you're saying; once I opt to display labels for the running totals (using the chart design user interface) I can't get them to disappear without going back into the chart design and turning them off.
This is a long shot, but in cell C50 you have
=IF(C$48=TRUE,C11,"N/A")
try changing it to
=IF(C$48=TRUE,C11,NA())
and copy down and across. NA() is a proper N/A error which excel won't plot.
What version of Excel are you using? Are you perhaps using the online web version? Perhaps a Mac version?

Last night I did you NA() instead of "N/A" and that solved the problem. Thank you.

Why would "N/A" not work?
