Dashboard Thoughts

Hi All,

I need to create a dashboard that represents the following:

5 Lines of Business (LOB)

...Each with the same 20 KPIs

......Each KPI based on a specific set of 5 to 15 Questions

.........Questions can be phrased as a statement and responses can be like the following (to compute a score):

(1) Never

(2) Infrequently

(3) Frequently

(4) Always

The 20 KPIs have different owners (so potentially 100 owners)

I think I need a solution that offers:

A. a consolidated place mat to summarize everything

B. a detailed view for each LOB

C. a comparison view across each KPI

D. a KPI owner view

I am pretty experienced in MS Access and Excel and I am thinking that Access would give me flexibility for managing the data and building trends, but before I embark in that direction, I thought I would see what you guys think. I also believe that visualizing a finished Dashboard solution would help me in designing the back-end if I were to go with Access.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have reviewed a lot of the content here and found some fantastic solutions. Can someone point me in the direction of a dashboard template that might meet the needs I have described? Thanks in advance!

Hi, MA_GA!

First of all welcome to Chandoo's website Excel forums. Thank you for your joining us and glad to have you here.

As a starting point I'd recommend you to read the green sticky topics at this forums main page. There you'll find general guidelines about how this site and community operates (introducing yourself, posting files, netiquette rules, and so on).

Among them you're prompted to perform searches within this site before posting, because maybe your question had been answered yet.

Feel free to play with different keywords so as to be led thru a wide variety of articles and posts, and if you don't find anything that solves your problem or guides you towards a solution, you'll always be welcome back here. Tell us what you've done, consider uploading a sample file as recommended, and somebody surely will read your post and help you.

And about questions in general...

If you haven't performed yet the search herein, try going to the topmost right zone of this page (Custom Search), type the keywords used in Tags field when creating the topic or other proper words and press Search button. You'd retrieve many links from this website, like the following one(s) -if any posted below-, maybe you find useful information and even the solution. If not please advise so as people who read it could get back to you as soon as possible.

And about this question in particular...

I suggest you to start looking here:

Regarding Excel vs Access as back-end it will all depends on:

- where is the actual data source

- which is the actual data volume

- other applications involved

As a dashboard project I'd try to keep it all in Excel, unless I have all the data in Access or the amount of data is huge.

Regards!
