Dashboard Feedback

Hi All,
I'm looking for some feedback on a dashboard I've already created and would like some non in business feedback on it. Any ideas or feedback on pitfalls or things I did well are appreciated. I do know that there are some items in it like the gauges that aren't always recommended, but for now they work for the purposes of the dashboard.

Apparently my file is too big for uploading at 1.7MB. If anyone has suggestions for uploading I'm all ears or I will gladly email to you.

Hi ,

You can use any public file-sharing website such as DropBox , SkyDrive , GoogleDocs , RapidShare , SpeedyShare to upload your file , give others permission to access and download your file , and then post the link here in this same thread.

Thanks Narayan!
I'm setting up a Dropbox. I just realized my home copy isn't as clean as my work copy. I think I may post some screen shots instead for now.

I'll try this in the mean time
Attached is a worksheet of screenshots of the dashboard in order of navigation.

It is a slicer driven dashboard with some VBA functions attached as well. It is still in it's infancy as my next steps are to add some "So What?" metrics to it as well.

After I go back to work I'll get my actual working copy and post if needed.

Feedback appreciated!

Bill

Hi Bill ,

You have put in so much of work , it is a pity ; asking for feedback when everything is done is never a good idea !

I will suggest one point straightaway ; I assume that the set of buttons labelled Community Snapshot .... are for selecting different views or different dashboards. I would think that such navigation buttons are generally wider than they are high , which means if they are arranged the way they are at present , they are in a pocket to the right of the screen ; this means that as they do not take up the entire column , you need to fit in something else beneath them.

It would be better if all navigation buttons could be at the bottom of the screen , arranged horizontally , so that they take up one or two rows at the most.

Could you elaborate more? I knew beforehand from browsing the site that the gauges were generally frowned on but for a high level view in my organization they are more easily understood than a bullet chart would be.

I am still working on general layout as well.

Hi Bill ,

What I meant was that since you have invested so much of time in bringing the dashboard to completion , making changes at this stage means undoing a lot of work before you can make the necessary changes.

A dashboard is a presentation , so it is not just the putting together of tables and charts ; it is to do with how well all the elements on the dashboard coordinate to give the viewer the picture that you wish to present.

Several elements go into making a great dashboard , one of which is certainly ease of navigation. The others are making the presentation more easy on the eye by avoiding monotony ; do not have charts of the same type , in the same colours , do not have too many series in any one chart ; if you have different sections of a dashboard , place the related items together ,....

I think if you go through some of the well-known texts / blogs on this , you will get a lot of ideas.

Secondly , unless a dashboard is meant to be printed out , build as much interactivity as possible , since this means you can make better use of screenspace , by spacing the different elements in their own sections.

For instance , in the initial screenshot you can have smaller gauges and more whitespace , so that the screen as a whole is easier on the eye.

The second screenshot has two sections , one for Organizational Community , and the other for Non-Organizational Community ; since the data for these two categories will have the same layout and their presentation will also be similar , this is an area which would have benefited if you could have had two option buttons for toggling between the two ; you could also have had two checkboxes , in which case the charts could shown either or a consolidation of both.
