"Reporting" formats from external systems have a habit of converting everything to text - there are probably better ways of bringing that information into Excel, perhaps by linking the underlying data to a Pivot Table, which will get around this annoyance.

Are you certain that you didn't use Absolute Cell references, as opposed to Relative, in your previous work? I've not seen any changes in Excel versions that would suggest there's been a change of approach via an update, and more to the point, I think this place would have been inundated with...

Well, it might do if you're fluent in whatever language that page is written in. It's highly unlikely that anyone will go to the effort of opening such a file for fear that it is infected in some way shape or form. Sorry, it explains nothing.
