hot fuzz comedy movie reviewHot Fuzz is a must watch for all comedy lovers. It is a brilliant movie about a super cop Nicholas Angel (angle) and his not so smart companion Danny. The movie is slick from the moment go. But what made me so happy about it is the excellent screen play and script. The humor is subtle yet outrageously hysterical.

The directors took a normal storyline of “a cop getting transfered to country side to give him a break” and converted it to such classic treatment of action and comedy that will leave you in split all the way to credits. I just cant stop laughing thinking over the lines like, “Oh, we’ve got red… and, er… white? ” or “Want anything from the shop?” [see more] Go ahead and watch it if you like to laugh or even if you dont like to laugh. This is such a slick comedy that leaving it out wont do you good.

Mera Jahan

In: Movies-Books, ideas

I am addicted to Mera Jahan - Tare Zameen Par, listen to it if you haven’t [lyrics here]. What thoughtful lyrics, I felt like someone cleaned my thoughts and soul as I listened to the song. It reminds me of the wall experience of the campus days.

Let Me In Without A Shout
Le Me In I Have A Doubt
Let Me In Without A Shout
Let Me In I Have A Doubt
There Are More,Many More
Many Many Many More Like Me

What is the last song / movie / book / idea that moved you so much that you wanted to share it with the world at 11:30 in the night?

Comedy Movies - Must Watch

In: Movies-Books

I like humor in any form. I must have spent countless hours watching old telugu classic comedies (made by Vamsi, Jandhyala et al), reading numerous books, watching tons of episodes of friends, simpsons, seinfeld, so many cartoons and animation stuff. I have rarely spent a day without laughing out hard watching something or reading something or thinking of something funny. I am sure you also like to do the same. So here it goes, without any delay, my list of must watch comedy movies.

Smala Sussie or Slim Sussie
My number one pick in this year is Smala Sussie, its a Swedish movie about a brother returning to country side to look for his sister only to find that she is dead. Its plot is so strong and so intricately weaved that even after completing the movie you will gather new meanings for the jokes and laugh. It has brilliantly humorous references to some of the Hollywood classics like scarface, the usual suspects, pulp fiction etc. I think a copy of this movie with english sub-titles is available for watching online, watch it now if you have 2 hours and mood to laugh.

Superbad
My next one is Superbad, even though it sounds like its yet another college comedy, the fact is, it is so refreshingly well treated. It is brilliantly made with loads of humor and neat story line. I must have laughed all the way from titles to credits.

Head above the water
Another good yet underrated comedy is Head above the water, this one is a classic love-mystery-confusion comedy with an interesting plot. Cameron Diaz played the role of an innocent and confused wife excellently.

Thank you for smoking
The next one is Thank you for smoking, its an intelligent satire on tobacco giants in US. The humor is so subtle and lovable. You wont ROFL watching this, but you sure would love the clever wordplay and situations.

Lady and the Trap
Another classic comedy I have seen this year is Lady and the Tramp, it is one of the first animation movies made by Walt Disney Productions about a dog named “lady”. Its a great musical with lots of well written songs. A must watch if you love animation movies.

The southpark movie
The final movie in this list is The Southpark movie, its a raging comedy about 4 boys and what happens when they watch an R-rated movie made by Canadians and learn bad words. It has got lot of well written songs and the whole movie is loaded with references to main stream media, politics. It might sound obscene for some people, but sheer strength of the satire is something.

Happy Laughing :))

The Calvin Fund!

In: Movies-Books, calvin fund, personal finance

Well, thats not a new mutual fund in the market, but I can understand your confusion, given that several AMCs have tiger funds. Calvin fund is the name I am giving to my investment drive. The aim is to purchase a complete collection of my favorite strips, “Calvin & Hobbes - The complete collection” which is selling at Rs. 4000 odd currently. I know, dont fume, this still is a dilbert blog, and that is a why, I am going to use my investment acumen (??) to purchase this book.

Fund name: The Calvin Fund
Objective: Systematically pump in money at regular intervals with the aim of generating investment returns of rs. 4000 or more
Timeframe: Short-term, maximum time given for the fund to generate returns in 8 months
Investment Amount: Rs. 1500 every month
Investment Avenues: Primarily in to mid-cap stocks, filtered through several screens or analyst reports and then hand-picked by me, If nothing works, the money might be parked in an mf trying to make short-term gains.
What if the fund fails: I HOPE YOU SUFFER A DEBILITATING BRAIN ANEURISM, YOU FREAK!, alternatively, I will fold-up my fund and buy the book anyways ;)

The fund will start officially on April 2007, and aims to close by December this year. Every month first week, I will disclose the funds performance and investments. May be the NAV as well.

What do you get from this? I know many people who want to buy this complete collection, but never got around to do it. If you are one of them, you can also create your Calvin Fund and purchase the same stocks / mfs that I am buying. Feel free to comment with tips on where I can park the money so that I get to lay my hands on this tome early.

Watch this space for April First Edition and wish me all the best :)

PHD’s Regular Blah # 7

In: Movies-Books, personal
  • I have been reading Investment Biker, Freakonomics and No Comebacks. The last one by Frederick Fosyth, a short story collection. Investment Biker is a good books if you like travelogues, biking and investing in any order.
  • I have seen a ton of good movies recently including Blood Diamond, American History X and Schindler’s List. I am actually cursing myself for not watching both AHx and Speilberg’s classic till now. They have been lying in my HDD for almost 2 years now and finally I had the courage to double click on them last weekend (last night). AHx made sure that Edward Norton along with Ewan McGregor and DiCaprio will nicely fit the gap that earlier generation of brilliant actors like Jack Nicholson, Tom Hanks and Morgan Freeman left.
  • Most of my free time after office is spent with cooking or reading or browsing. I think my A75 is dusting, may be this month you will see some purnography after all those korean photos.
  • We have booked an Activa last week. We are naming it “Manmadhudu”, after a popular telugu movie starring Nagarjuna. No specific reason. Temporarily I am shelving my thoughts of acquiring an Avenger. A 2-wheeler for everyone in the family is our priority now :)
