Excel Links – Delay in State migration visualization results edition

excel links - 16 comments

Hello friends,

First a quick update about state migration visualization contest.

We got more than 50 wonderful entries for this contest. I have compiled 50% of the entries. Due to personal reasons (its annual vacation time at our household), I had to delay the rest and resume it after first week of June. So the results will be announced in 2nd week of June. Thanks for understanding and your patience. Watch this space for mind-boggling dashboards in 3 more weeks.

Meanwhile, here is a sneak-peek at 3 random entries.

entry 1, entry 2, entry 3

Now on to some juicy, delicious and awesome Excel links.

What is so special about 39% zoom?

Here is a trick question. What happens when you zoom down your workbook to 39%? Go ahead and check it. I will wait. Got the answer? Mike shows us that at 39% zoom, Excel maps out named ranges on the cell grid. Pretty cool way to quickly uncover the names in a workbook.

Make Marimekko charts in Excel with VBA

My good friend Robert shows an interesting way to create marimekko charts in Excel using VBA. Check it out and plot your data today.

Axis labels that don’t block data

Jon wonders how to place axis labels without blocking data (or chart bars). And he comes up with an ingenious solution, as usual. Check it out.

How to design a live, interactive web-based dashboard – case study

Ever wondered how big, interactive & live dashboards are designed. Recently we had elections in India (largest democracy in the world, so you can imagine the kind of data & challenge this creates). Gramener, a data visualization company partnered with Microsoft & CNN-IBN (Indian version of CNN) create a cool live dashboard on poll results day. They tell us the process behind creation of such dashboard in this article & the few that follow it. Very insightful.

That is all for now. I will see you again in next post.

  1. about "state migration visualization contest", I am very sorry to say, but the management of this competition is quite disappointing ... I think you had to publish the files immediately and allow the two juries (popular and experts) to do their job

about the "some juicy, delicious and awesome Excel links" ... is it possible to add here in the comments the links of our articles published in the last month?
we think that these are very cool, and do not understand why they were excluded from this collection

    • Chandoo says:

First lets talk about the second point:

"is it possible to add here in the comments the links of our articles published in the last month?"

Of course yes. I read a bunch of Excel blogs thru my RSS reader. I have added your site to my daily reading list. I know E90E50 has many beautiful, creative and outstanding examples of what can be done with Excel. I will certainly feature your work here. Sorry I missed it earlier because your site was not part of my daily reading list (I some how assumed that you have no RSS feed. I am wrong).

      Now your first point,

"I am very sorry to say, but the management of this competition is quite disappointing"

I can understand your disappointment. But sorting thru contest entries is no easy task. I spend between 10 to 15 minutes per file and take several screenshots, animated demo, note down comments on the technique used. Doing this for 50 files takes a lot of time. When you combine this with equally busy personal life, process of running a business, writing for a website etc. you can guess what happens.

Since this contest has no time sensitive nature, I assume no one should have a problem when the results are posted.

      • @ Chandoo
        I understand your reasons

you said: "Since this contest has no time sensitive nature, I assume no one should have a problem when the results are posted"

this is true but I can not wait to see the files and could not imagine having to wait all this time ... ok , maybe I'm too impatient I'm sorry ...

I think the greatness of chandoo is also about being able to take criticism and always aim to improve, this is a great site for its audience and its staff ... Hui, Jeff and Chandoo (and all other), keep it up

    Hi Robert
you are doing very brilliant work on E90E50fx 🙂
please: have a little patience 😐
Chandoo and his helpers have to judge very many entries
you are most definitely present at the results!

Here is a THANKS to your work on e90e50fx 🙂

    best greeting
    Stef@n

  3. Chandoo, my friend,

many thanks for the mention. FYI: I published a follow-up post on Marimekko Charts today:

    http://www.clearlyandsimply.com/clearly_and_simply/2014/05/pivot-like-marimekko-charts-in-excel.html

Now for something more important: I second Roberto’s request: you should definitely have a closer look at the work of the Franken’s team and consider to mention them in one of your next Excel Links posts:

    https://sites.google.com/site/e90e50charts/

I assume it must be very hard for you to draw up a shortlist and to decide who makes the cut. I get that.

However, Kris, Roberto and the rest of the Franken’s team really deserve this. They are way more innovative with Excel than I will ever be.

    Many thanks for your consideration.

    • @Robert
i like your follow-up post too ... well done
you are one of the best experts and innovator that I know ... so this:
"They are way more innovative with Excel than I will ever be"
      is not true 🙂 ...
      anyway thanks of your words

  4. Stef@n says:

    learned something about this again
    Regards
