Hi,

What is the most un-usual task that you have performed through Excel.
Be it function, macro or plain spread sheet use.

To be honest the most un-usual task I performed was to play MP3 song through Excel. This too was around 2 years ago.

If you can share your experience, weird will not be an appropriate word but yes closer to being weird!

Anything which you might have developed for your client or for your personal use which is un-conventional.

Please do share your experience if possible.

I was asked to make a Sales Dashboard for specific area, having options for month wise / distributor wise; (without using Pivot)
It was not un-usual, but the most hectic task (for me at least).

I'd used so many helper columns/sheets to achieve, here is the snap:


Designed for 17 inch LCD, I have merged 2 snaps.

I used Excel a couple of years back to clean up my song bank. A huge music lover, I was uncomfortable with naming of mp3 files - using English alphabets to name Hindi and other vernacular Indian words - especially the regular pronunciations - which was often a trouble while searching for play. So I took the following route
- created a text files of all the MP3s in a given folder (dos command > prn)
- imported that in excel, text to columns and all to clear up fluff
- data mined and corrections, including =Proper, =lower =trim, search and replace etc.
- created new column and concatenated with typical dos command prefix, to attain the necessary file renaming syntax
- copy - paste in dos window - behold, zzzzzzzzzzzzip , ALL the files in the folder, were renamed according to my taste

Even today - when I use popular tools like MP3Tag, I smile at myself for the awesome 'invention' I did back in 2007. I had just signed up with Chandoo - I recon PHD was just starting back then. Proud to be back !

But our usual could be unusual for others and vice-versa !
I understood that with the face of some R/C club buddies
when they saw my worksheet estimating Ni-MH charging time
for specials mode with LCD emulating of a specific charger.

« Oh no ! Don't tell me you made it with Excel ?! »
« How you did it ? It's the real LCD ! »
