Trying to convert numbers to text format

I am putting together a tutorial for some coworkers. I have a list of numbers in Accounting format. I am trying to convert some of those numbers to text in order to demonstrate that numbers stored as Text cannot be added.

I have tried the following, and no matter what I do, the number is still recognized as a number and therefore I am still able to perform calculations on them:

1. In the formula bar, I have entered a $ at the beginning
2. I have changed the format to Text from the pull down menu in the Number group of the Home tab
3. I have entered commas where they would normally go.

I expected all of these things to convert the number to a text format, but it is not working.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi,

If there's something is pure numeric then adding some numeric value will produce the output with auto convert it to numeric.

To convert it to text you need to add some non alphabetical character to it.

Hi ,

You are not doing anything wrong ; Excel is intelligent enough to recognize when a data item is a number !

See the attached file.
