Firstly, Welcome to the Chandoo.org Forums

Try using the latest version of Excel you have available
Then goto File, Open,
find the file and then use the small drop down and select, Open & Repair

There are multiple tricks which can help you repair Excel file. And luckily there's no need to use any paid software for this. But if the manual tricks fail or don't work for you, then only you should go for a professional solution. You can try these (one by one):
  • Open and Repair to repair Excel file and open it. It's a built-in repair feature in MS Excel program.
  • Use Macro to extract data of the chart from a corrupted spreadsheet.
  • Convert corrupt Excel file into SYLK or symbolic link format to recover data from it.
Refer to this blog post for more information - http://wordpress.semnaitik.com/2014/03/05/repair-excel-file/

Before you can use any paid software, you must try the manual tricks shared in the above blog post. I hope the shared information would be helpful here.

Thanks and best regards.

Well, this type of error is faced due to unsupported file format or error in the Excel file data. To fix this type of situation check the file format of the Excel sheet.

  • Verify the support of xlsx extension and then go to ‘My Computer’.
  • After that browse Tools > Folder Options > File Types.
  • Now, check the ‘xlsx’ extension is included there or not. If in case not, then rename the file and change ‘.xlsx’ to ‘.xls’.
Hope this will help you but if not then run the open and repair utility. This will help you to fix the error and also scan your system with the MS Excel Repair tool. This is free utility that scan, detect and fix the error.

Use your backup of the file to try any type of repair method on the file.
In order to recover the data from the corrupt excel file you can follow the steps mentioned below:
  1. Click File > Open.
  2. Click the location and folder that contains the corrupted workbook.
  3. In the Open dialog box, select the corrupted workbook.
